Early Tourney: Ones a Joke
3/19/2010 1:54:23 PM

As reported here earlier, the one seeds have it too easy.

The ones play near, or at, home. The first game is a bye and the second is a scrimmage.

ESPN is to blame for the Big East flop start, as it hypes this conference non-stop.

CUSA should consider disbanding.

One of the worst teams is New Mexico, which should be terminated by Wash.

The Texas coach is horrible at games.

T-Who?
3/15/2010 4:33:00 PM

The NIT (National Inconsequential Tournament) is exactly where TU belongs, because it is punishment.

Sure, TU should go play in this grubby NIT (National Ironic Tournament), apologizing all the way.

Exactly when did TU and ORU quit caring about reaching the big time?

The CUSA tournament drew flies at the BOK, and quiet flies at that, there was no buzz.

That tournament could have been played in the BOK board room.

NCAA tournament tips:

The number one seeds have it too easy, they play near home and have two byes.

A 1 or 2 seed has to win it all.

Sure, early upsets are plentiful and plenty of fun, but they never carry over; early upsetters are subsequently beaten by 31 by all the future NBA players.

Thirteen seed Siena will be favored over Purdue; 13-seed Murray State is apt to beat three seed Vandy.

Syracuse will be hard-pressed to get by its second round game with Gonzaga or Florida State.

Fair long shots: UNLV, OSU, Pitt, Missouri.

Good long shots: Tennessee Georgia Tech, Gonzaga, Xavier, Temple, New Mexico.

Excellent long shots: UTEP, Baylor, Texas A&M.

Big 12 teams could play in the most important games of the tournament: Kansas State versus BYU or Florida, then Xavier or Pitt, then Syracuse.
Texas A&M versus Duke; Baylor versus Notre Dame, then Villanova, then Duke.

If you are out of touch for TU's NIT (National Idiotic Tournament), here's what you are apt to miss on the radio.

"Come on ref, they're gouging us, they're tripping us, they're poking us in the eye. Where'd these refs come from, an on-campus frat house? Is there a NIT (National Irrelevant Tournament) official here who can see if those whistles even work? Since when is a fracture not worth at least an alternate possession?"

Picker Versus Media
3/12/2010 1:27:24 PM

This question has been asked twice in the last few days. And you know what that means. Maybe a few more are wondering the same thing.

Picker: What do you think when members of the media come after you?

Answer: It means so many good things, we hardly know where to start.

It means, obviously, we got under somebody's skin. Media skin is about as thin as an onion's.

Somehow the media put itself in the position of the ultimate authority -- it sits in the press box chomping on free grub, making judgements without the prospect of being held responsible. The media can dish it freely, but don't like returning pies in the face.

This has been a memorable picking season as, beyond hitting more football winners than anytime in predicting history, we have held media members one and all accountable on the following issues: rotten picking, and being homers. What good is all the blah-blah-blah-analysis if you can't pick the occasional winner? The answer to that one is, you shouldn't pay much attention at all to anybody who shoots his or her mouth off, but couldn't hit the winner of the replay.

The silly TV guys in Oklahoma City once stopped a show to rag on the Picks simply because we had called attention to their kissy-face attitude about a certain coaching staff. A local radio station once did a weekly show about the Picks, until we hit so many they probably had nothing but praise to spread. Even newspaper and radio media people have been know to chase the Picks.

And we all probably know why, don't we.

Help!
3/9/2010 2:37:46 PM

The OU football team needs offensive linemen, receivers, a consistent runner, defensive linemen, and it also needs for the quarterback to quit throwing it to the opposition. Plus this season's schedule is tortuous.

The OSU football team wants to be the next Houston, which hasn't won a big game since 1960-something. It will be using an offense that features three yards and a cloud of bubble screens.

The TU football team couldn't stop traffic in a school zone last season and couldn't get to .500. Numerous coaches have bolted.

The ORU basketball team lost again to Bismark, Butte, somebody like that, and under the current regime, hasn't won a game in the NCAA tournament.

The OU basketball team has been ridiculed in public so many times by its coach, it appears to have quit listening, and will post a losing record.

The TU basketball team scores 55 on a good night and hasn't been to the NCAA tournament in seven years.

The OSU basketball team is undersized and well coached and is 50-50 to win one game in the NCAA tournament.

Uconn owns women's basketball.

About the last time a state team did anything at the college baseball World Series, wooden bats were used.

Somebody said the OU and TU women softball teams had a chance to be halfway decent.

Clearly it is time to don Thunder gear.
